I forgot to mention that my first-ever experience with the city of Chicago was pronouncing it “CHICK-uh-go” when I was like seven or eight — I’d read the name in a Hardy Boys book and found it on the atlas — and my parents bursting out laughing. When they corrected me, I recognized the “Shi-CAW-go” pronunciation from TV but had had no idea that it referred to the capital of the Midwest.
