A note.
Unlike apparently everyone else, when I finally heard theĀ Ghost EP version of “Everything Is Embarrassing,” I felt like I was finally hearing the song properly after months of listening to it through cotton: the skeletal, unfinished quality of the original demo that was circulating had always bothered me. I don’t believe in words like “overproduced” — the real question isn’t how much, but what production is appropriate to the individual piece, and the final version of “Embarrassing” is no less languorous or ghostly (Sky’s vocals are still slightly buried), just higher contrast.
(Initially I was going to compare it to meeting someone as an assured adult after having only known them as a gawky teenager, but there’s no such thing as a finished person until the grave.)
