Q:I just went to a name etymology site and it gave me that. What'd you mean by "derived"?

andyhutchins

I was scoffing at the suggestion that the Spanish name was derived from the English word rather than being a variation on the Spanish jacinto (which is descended from the same Latinized Greek as the English hyacinth). I realize you probably didn’t mean to give that impression — talking about cross-language equivalents for a unilingual audience is full of pitfalls — and I’m probably oversensitive to suggestions of Anglocentrism.
