Q:Since it election season, any thoughts on the way music has been used (or misused) in elections past or present?
Not really, no! I think that both music fans desperate for real-world relevance to their obsession and political journalists desperate for anything interesting to take up column inches have made more out of campaign theme songs and stadium fillers — and their political alignment or lack thereof with the artists who originally wrote and performed them — than they really warrant. The best use of music to political ends I’ve ever seen is Gloria Estefan’s “Get On Your Feet” in theĀ Parks and Recreation episode “The Comeback Kid,” because it underlined just how little politics and music have to say to each other.
