Q:Bogart. Why Chicago? Whyeeeeeeee?
Family reasons, in part; financial reasons, in part; and (covering the entire Venn diagram) a rootless anxiety that I’ll never measure up to New York. I associate it with failure, to one degree or another. I’ve failed in or around Chicago too, but much less recently; and returning there older and sadder feels less like a new beginning than like the resolution of unfinished business.
More shortly, I need to build a life, and Chicago is a great place to start.
