Nitsuh Abebe on whistling in crossover indie pop.  →
I think maybe more can be teased out of the synthesized whistling in Britney’s “I Wanna Go” and Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger,” where carefreeness is not really the subtext — instead it’s used as a controlled kind of shrillness, a defiant assertion of self in a shared space. Which is what whistling, at least in public, is. (Or maybe that’s the...

“A publicity stunt went awry when 200 parrots were trained to shout the original title of “It ain’t no sin”. The parrots were subsequently released in the jungles of South America still repeating “It ain’t no Sin” over and over again.”

girlboymusic asked: However: you know how the sunscreen song says "live in New York once, but leave before it makes you hard"? New York can be a beautiful city, and it's unfathomable & fulfilling when the things that make this city a dream for so many people are the things you trip nonchalantly by on your way to work, and if you make it here you really will feel like you can make it anywhere. But...

tomewing: New Guardian column about the way we (meaning the Brits - I don’t know about how things stand in America) relate to pre-rock pop music, and reality TV’s radical rewriting of pop history. I think this is one of my better pieces for them! As always in America, things are too diffuse to generalize easily. My unscientific observation is that people over forty tend to roll their eyes at...

After two months with an iPhone I’ve come to the conclusion that the best-sounding music to play from its speaker is old 78s from the pre hi-fi era, because they were recorded at the same dynamic range and compression that shitty little phone speakers allow.

Right now, if a group of neighborhood children broke my window playing baseball, I’d keep the ball and tell them it served them right. More later, when I’m not dead.

tomewing answered your question: What has two thumbs and is going to try to time getting to the theater so that he doesn’t have to sit through much of LMFAO tonight? They have already said sorry for party rocking. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT. As I tell the kids I catch running in the library, I don’t care if they’re sorry I care that they stop.

Yes, I bought it. None of the tracks are exactly rarities, but I support Bert Williams being played at soccer moms, middle-aged guys pitching each other dot-com startups like it’s 1997, and teenagers who think they’re cultured because they’re reading Twilight in a public space.

Jonathan’s Intermittent Fall Television Report #1: In which I watch first episodes and say what I think, to be continued until I lose interest. Whitney and New Girl are different kinds of terrible with a kernel of something possibly interesting if the kinks get worked out; in both, the central performances are worth noting even while the rictus figurines of the mechanical carousel around...
