April 2011

Some day I am going to have to write the long, way-too-personal, and extremely dull defense of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies that they deserve. But today is not that day.

Oi, New Yorkers.

We’re firming up our itinerary for the weekend that I’ll be in New York (see you on Saturday, by the way), but I had to ask for shopping recommendations. Record stores, comics shops, bookstores? In each case, the more overstuffed and full of weird obscurities the better. I can get new releases anywhere; my various obsessions tend to run towards the vintage, even antique. So whaddya got?

I just read your Till The World Ends review on The Singles Jukebox. Spot. On. Thanks for all the great work on there.

Aww, thank you!

And thanks to the Jukebox, the first people to want to publish my music writing in any forum I didn’t create myself.

#oh don't worry the water didn't get all over anything except library books, my record collection, and the power supply
Hi! Before I shelve the issue and forget to say so, I really liked your piece in One More Robot. "I don't do top 10s; I just do 10s" made me laugh, and it was a nice take on the subject. The bit about being in a record shop and simultaneously having access to reviews and eBay and databases and the rest resonated a lot - the mystery or possibility of ignorance is pretty much gone and so the challenge is, I guess, in not feeling cheated and just deciding you're happy to buy this, now, for this much, and to go home and play it instead of fretting or cross-referencing. The joy in finding the record or in downloading someone's bandcamp bedroom pop is pretty much around the same thing: listening to the music. Reading a piece about vinyl (or any other format) that didn't completely miss that point was awesome.

Thank you very much for the kind words! It was a blast to write for One More Robot, and it was very nice to see something I’d written in print for the first time (well, since the days of high school yearbooks and church bulletins).

I’ve posted the piece to my standalone site, if anyone’s desperately curious. The magazine is only sold in Dublin shops, but you might be able to get a copy if you ask Dean nicely.

Por Amarte Enrique Iglesias

ENRIQUE IGLESIAS, “POR AMARTE”

Another few weeks, another Enrique Iglesias #1. This is the third single off his debut album, and in a lot of ways it sounds like it.

Tumblr Meetup!

(Previously On: I’m coming to New York to see Katherine St. Asaph into her new apartment. We want to get together with you!)

We’re planning on meeting up at 8pm on Saturday May 7th at Hell Gate Social (Google Map) in Astoria, and we hope to see as many of you there as can make it. (If anyone present knows any reason why we should not, speak now, etc. Plenty of time to make other plans.) I’ll be messaging everyone who responded previously — looks like about a dozen of us? — but anyone else is welcome too.

(Except stalkers. Please don’t track us down just in order to murder us. Thanks!)
